Northeastern Region
Description
Askja is a volcanic caldera located in the central highlands of Iceland, known for its otherworldly landscapes and geothermal features. The area includes Viti, a crater lake with stunning turquoise waters, and a barren landscape dotted with volcanic ash and rock formations. Askja is also famous for its eruption in 1875, which caused widespread damage and created a new lava field. Today, the area is popular for hiking and camping, and visitors can even take a dip in the geothermal waters of Viti.
